FRAGILE RAGE (1968)

This work was conceived in Lake Como, watching boys dive off a building into the water. One of them had 1968 tattooed on the back of his neck. The scribble down the side was formed while trying to calm my nerves during a Gavin Bryars talk, as too much noise was being made around me... these inscriptions the sound of chairs scraping and people talking languages I couldn't translate. I wasn't even doing the talking. Concrete memories lie faded at the top. I'd taken analogue images of the boys jumping. But I hadn't got the negatives developed yet. I waited 3 weeks... to see if the memory of the images that didn't exist yet were as strong in my mind. These words existing to remind myself the points that got me to press the shutter, or to tell others what is about that moment I wanted to capture so much. Some energy behind appearance in the minds eye.

The handful of riso prints were made during the Artists' Research Laboratory XXVII CSAV residency at Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como, July 2023.

The papers, prints, documents, memories, have been embossed with REMEMBERYOUWEREMADETOBEUSED logo, stamped with edition number, hand signed. + packaged....

They never had a title before, I guess you could call them 1968, or at least I would in my mind. I thought about how I would send them out - and decided to use fragments of packaging I have not let go of, for whatever reason - because I like this barcode tape, or the way someone wrote a date on plastic. FRAGILE FRAGILE tape getting torn, to reveal il est agil. and there's rage somewhere in there too... a namesake in the tearing of what we've got. 1968 was by no means a fragile year.

Each print has been packaged with re-used cardboard, plastic, tape, to become objects in their own right. Things I've kept that I'm passing on - I've always had to try and make the reproduced individual somehow. And I like the idea of the print being visible in transit... for more postal epherma to add to the journey. Ask yr postman what she thinks about it all.
